Say what you want about Tiger King, but it really did deliver us some wonderful memes.
That being said, the ongoing saga of Joe Exotic, or Joseph Allen Maldonado-Passage, and his attempts to secure release from prison have become rather tiresome.
The series remains one of Netflix’s biggest successes. Along with Ginny & Georgia, it’s one of only two shows to spend in excess of 24 consecutive days in the number one position on Netflix’s Top 10 charts.
A third show is well on its way to joining them, and as Forbes points out, there’s a chance it could well become the most popular series in Netflix history.
Because Netflix tends to keep its cards close to its chest, Forbes has developed a ranking system of its own:
Last year, I formed a points-based system that allowed me to rank every show’s popularity based on their Top 10 placements each day…
And while this system doesn’t give us hard numbers, it does let us know which shows have been the most consistently popular on Netflix.
According to that ranking system, the top 10 is as follows:
At one stage, it appeared that Avatar: The Last Airbender would go all the way, but it topped out at 13th.
CoComelon is a children’s show, in case you were wondering why you’ve never heard of it.
At 22nd on that list is Manifest, with 248 points, but it’s only spent 25 days on the list, marking an incredible rise.
In fact, the series just completed its 23rd consecutive day in the number one position of the Top 10 charts:
So if Manifest can climb past The Queen’s Gambit on these rankings? And if the show can top Ginny & Georgia’s record 29-day run in first place? Then a case could be made for Manifest being Netflix’s most popular show of the Top 10 era.
The craziest part of it all? Manifest isn’t even a Netflix-produced show—which makes this story all the more interesting.
Manifest first aired in 2018. Below, the trailer for season one:
IMDb offers this synopsis:
A commercial airliner suddenly reappears after being missing for five years. As those aboard reintegrate into society, they experience guiding voices and visions of events yet to occur, and soon a deeper mystery unfolds.
Sounds a little like Lost, which really should have stopped a good few seasons before it did.
NBC actually ceased production of Manifest after the third season, and Netflix passed on the chance to take over production of a fourth.
However, given the incredible success of the series over the past month, fans could be forgiven for being cautiously optimistic about the streaming giant revisiting that decision.
At present, Manifest isn’t available to South African Netflix users, so you’ll have to find it elsewhere if you want to join the party.
