You might have to say the name of this new movie at least once, though.
If you have an interest in horror movies, that is.
Written by Jordan Peele and directed by Nia DaCosta, this reboot is the sequel to the 1992 supernatural slasher film and is scheduled to hit theatres later this year.
Get ready to say Candyman.
We saw an early trailer way back in February last year, but this one has definitely upped the ante.
Universal and MGM’s reboot stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a struggling artist who begins to lose his grip on reality after uncovering the myth and legend of Candyman, Gizmodo reports.
As the ghastly urban legend goes, if someone says his name to a mirror five times, Candyman will appear and kill whoever summoned him.
The original Candyman, based on Clive Barker’s short story The Forbidden, was directed by Bernard Rose and spawned two sequels: 1995’s Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh and 1999’s Candyman: Day of the Dead.
The official synopsis for the latest version:
For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighbourhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror.
In the present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Abdul-Mateen II) and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris), move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials.
With Anthony’s painting career on the brink of stalling, a chance encounter with a Cabrini Green old-timer (Colman Domingo) exposes Anthony to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind Candyman.
Anthony begins to explore the legend, and in doing so, opens the door to his complex and terrifying past.
Trailer time, if you dare:
Candyman will be in theatres on August 27.
