Britney Spears finally spoke out about the “abusive” and “traumatic” conservatorship that allowed her father, Jamie Spears (pictured above), to control the most intimate aspects of her life.
Her father has been in charge of all of her affairs for 13 years since she suffered a mental breakdown in 2008.
Among some of the bombshell accusations against her father revealed in the court testimony last week, Britney said that she is forced to keep an IUD inside her, has restrictions placed on who she can hang out with, is forced to take strong medication, and is often treated like a slave.
Spears, 39, had pleaded with the judge to change her status in the eye of the law because, as she told the court, “I want my life back.”
Sadly, the ‘Toxic’ singer has failed on that front, with the judge in Los Angeles refusing to end the conservatorship.
The ruling was: “The conservator’s request to suspend James P. Spears immediately upon the appointment of Bessemer Trust Company of California as sole conservator of the estate is denied without prejudice.”
That means that Judge Brenda Penny denied the request, but added wealth management firm Bessemer Trust as a co-conservator in charge of her finances, as per Sky News.
Britney’s allegation that she had been given medication without consent prompted her father to file a petition to investigate her claims:
His team asked the court to “investigate the veracity of the allegations made”, which he has repeatedly denied, saying he only wants the best for his daughter.
Mr Spears also suggested that Jodi Montgomery – who was made his co-conservator in 2019 and put in charge of Britney’s personal and medical decisions – should be looked into.
In his petition, he claimed to be “concerned about the management and care of his daughter” and that Ms Montgomery does “not reflect her wishes”.
While Britney’s friends and allies support her for “using her voice”, this is not the first time that she has tried to change her legal status and appeal against the conservatorship.
Britney’s lawyer, Samuel D. Ingham III, asked to remove Mr Spears from the conservatorship last year.
Deadline also reports that just a few years after the conservatorship was put in place, Britney was showing some signs of distress and had tried without success to loosen the grip her father has over her $50 million-plus fortune, plus her medical, personal, and professional choices:
According to documents referenced in a New York Times investigation published early last week, the now 39-year-old Spears declared the conservatorship had “too, too much” control over her life overall.
The fact is in most circumstances, with the exception of extreme cases, conservatorships often last mere months or a few years.
In this case, Spears’ status has been repeatedly upheld by the courts, as it was today.
Despite the conservatorship not ending, she still has an opportunity to file a request to change the conservatorship itself, which she and Ingham have not yet done.
It is still to be determined if Ingham is the right lawyer for Britney, though.
We’ll probably hear something from her on Instagram soon.
