Jasmine Hartin, 32, a British socialite and partner of the son of British millionaire Tory peer Lord Ashcroft, was charged with manslaughter by negligence after shooting a top cop in Belize with his gun.
The Supreme Court Justice Herbert Lord released her on $15 000 bail with conditions that included good behaviour a few days after being charged.
Hartin had been laying low until her mother posted a video of her publicly confronting her husband over custody of their children, four-year-old twins Charlie and Elle.
All she allegedly wanted was to see her children after being locked away for some time, but Andrew Ashcroft had other plans, reports Yahoo! News:
“Why won’t you let me see the kids, Andrew? Why won’t you let me see the children?” Hartin is heard saying as Ashcroft runs away saying “stop” in the video.
Then she was arrested again, to be tossed back into Belize Central Prison, known as one of the world’s most notorious prisons.
It is reported that Hartin’s lawyer said she was checking in with police as required on Thursday when she was suddenly detained:
She was then hit with two additional charges: common assault and possession of a small amount of drugs.
Police Commissioner Chester Williams cited Hartin’s videotaped confrontation with Ashcroft over the kids as the reason for the arrest, saying she violated her release conditions by not behaving in “an orderly manner.”
The New York Post reports that Hartin was confused about her re-arrest:
“All I did was try to collect my personal belongings and see my children.
“I have obeyed every single court order. I’ve obeyed my curfew, I’ve been here every single day to check in — I’ve done absolutely nothing wrong here,” she said.
Her mother also said, “I was there! She did nothing at all.”
Her attorney was furious, and said that she wasn’t given enough time to come up with bail money:
“You can’t ambush people like that,” Bradley told reporters outside the courthouse. “This is not some Gestapo country. We don’t behave like that.”
It looks like Hartin, who rather prophetically said “I would rather go back to prison than give up fighting to see them. I will fight until I have no fight left in me,” has only harder times ahead.
