In the mood to revel in some boyish fascination with things that go boom?
Well, the US Navy’s explosive shock testing could do it for you.
No judgement, it is another Monday and not a four-day week after all.
Anyway, the US Navy has been carrying out ‘Full Ship Shock Trials’ off of the country’s east coast, reports the BBC.
As part of a test to assess the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford’s ability to withstand battle conditions, a 40 000-pound (18 143kg) explosion was detonated.
The explosion was registered as a 3,9 magnitude earthquake according to the US Geological Survey.
For more context, during the past 30 days, South Africa was shaken by five quakes of magnitude 3,0 or above, and 37 quakes between 2,0 and 3,0, according to Volcano Discovery.
So that just shows you how the US Navy is doing some pretty intense stuff.
The US Navy posted this video of the USS Gerald R. Ford undergoing a Full Ship Shock Trial in the Atlantic Ocean, June 18, 2021:
You can really feel the shake around the 1:10 mark, and again from 1:45:
Best any enemies of the US know that this warship appears to have survived the harsh conditions that it might encounter in something like a battle.
