Netflix is releasing a three-part documentary series that looks at the 1996 killing of French documentary producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier (pictured above) in West Cork, Ireland.
It is called Sophie: A Murder in West Cork.
The truth behind the murder of 39-year-old Sophie became a national obsession in both Ireland and France and prompted a sprawling investigation that lasted more than 25 years.
The Independent reports that the crime was “one of Ireland’s most famous murders”.
Sophie: A Murder in West Cork is directed by John Dower, a 2013 BAFTA nominee for the film A Year In Yellow, and produced by Oscar-winning producer Simon Chinn (Man on Wire).
The documentary will feature commentary from Sophie’s family, including her son Pierre-Louis Baudey, as well as those involved in the investigation like the local press, and members of the community.
Executive producer Suzanne Lavery said in a press statement that the docuseries aims to honour Sophie, her family, and that rural community in the West of Ireland;
“What does seem so tragic, is that Sophie’s perfect escape turned out to be where she lost her life. And the shock of it still reverberates in that community 25 years later.”
This is the short synopsis from Netflix:
A shocking murder in rural Ireland sets off an increasingly convoluted quest for justice that spans decades and cuts across national borders.
