Having the hacking collective known as Anonymous coming after you isn’t exactly a laughing matter.
Over the years, the group has exposed the financial records of various individuals and institutions (including our own government), and now they have their target aimed at Elon Musk.
Possibly, because there are some very mixed signals about whether or not the threat is genuine.
This story started with a video released a few days back, accusing Musk of “destroying lives” with his tweets about cryptocurrencies.
Below via The Independent:
Mr Musk was accused by the internet activists of showing a “clear disregard tor the average working person” through his Twitter activity, which was blamed for contributing to the recent crypto market crash.
“Recently your carefully created public image is being exposed and people are beginning to see you as nothing more than another narcissistic rich dude who is desperate for attention,” the video stated…
“You may think you are the smartest person in the room, but now you have met your match. We are Anonymous, we are legion, expect us.”
Here’s that video, before we get to the intrigue around its authenticity:
The style is in keeping with past Anonymous videos, but all might not be as it seems.
The most popular Twitter Anonymous account, YourAnonNews, has denied that the group behind the video, as has another account believed to be connected to the group.
However, reports Forbes, another popular Anonymous account says different:
YourAnonCentral, an account with 5.9 million followers that appears to claim some affiliation with the hacking collective, has stated the video is from Anonymous.
In a 5 June blog posting, YourAnonCentral said: “The hacker group Anonymous has released a new video challenging the infamous billionaire Elon Musk after he crashed the Bitcoin stocks. Anonymous wasted no time in exposing the controversial billionaire.”
At this point, it’s unclear who is really behind the video, and “the nature of a decentralized hacking collective is such that anyone can claim to be part of it simply by taking action such as posting a video.”
What we do know for sure is that Elon doesn’t seem fussed, having remained silent as the video racked up millions of views.
He did respond to a parody, choosing to use two ‘laugh cry’ emojis over actual words, which I would say is the most worrying part of this entire saga:

Language is dying. Down with emojis.
The world’s third-richest man (at the time of writing) also shows no signs of slowing down on the meme front:

To be fair, he’s got a point.
