This six-episode limited series from HBO is set in a tropical resort, which sounds delightful, except that things take a turn for the worse and we realise pretty quickly that an escape from paradise is really the more desirable way to go.
With some quality writing and excellent casting, The White Lotus satirises class privilege, dropping a few truth bombs doused in humour about “a lot of rich, white, f***ed up people.”
The satirical dramedy was created, written, and directed by Mike White, best known for School Of Rock, although he also created another of HBO’s dark comedies, Enlightened.
The White Lotus has a very exciting cast – Murray Barlett (Looking), Connie Britton (Nashville), Jennifer Coolidge (2 Broke Girls), Alexandra Daddario (True Detective), Fred Hechinger (Eighth Grade), Jake Lacy (Girls), Brittany O’Grady (Little Voice), Natasha Rothwell (Insecure), Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria), and Steve Zahn (Treme), among others.
The official synopsis as follows:
A social satire set at an exclusive Hawaiian resort, the series follows the vacations of various hotel guests over the span of a week as they relax and rejuvenate in paradise.
But with each passing day, a darker complexity emerges in these picture-perfect travellers, the hotel’s cheerful employees, and the idyllic locale itself.
The teaser sets it all up nicely:
The White Lotus will premiere on HBO on July 11.
Holding thumbs for it to be released on Showmax, too.
