Volcano lava looks like something that belongs in a child’s imagination, but jumping from the couch to the dining room chair doesn’t cut it in real life.
While volcanoes can be deadly (like the Congo’s Nyiragongo volcano that erupted recently), there are some people with drones who try to play around with lava.
Fagradalsfjall volcano, a mountain on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland, is a hot mess that drone pilots love.
Björn Steinbekk took his drone out and recorded magnificent footage right up close to the erupting Fagradalsfjall volcano in March, and now others are following in his footsteps.
While Steinbekk’s drone just about misses the molten lava sputtering out from the top, Joey Helms let his plunge right into the glowing volcano.
Per RTE News, the video, taken on May 24 by drone operator and YouTuber Helms, is one of the most immersive shots out there, providing a “rare view right into the volcano’s caldera and lava fountain during one of its Geysir-like eruptions”.
Helms spoke about the experience of manually operating the first-person-view DJI FPV drone through the volcano’s “tricky” conditions:
“Around the volcano where you have the hot gases emitted they cause turbulences all around it and hot rocks raining on to you, flying these things is even more tricky.”
He also mentions that FPV drones are notorious for crashing, and that it is a part of the hobby.
Here’s what the drone saw in its last seconds of existence:
Helms later shared this stunning footage, which didn’t involve the death of a drone:
I found that one a little more soothing.
