The bad news, if you’re keen to jet over to the UK, is that British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have, once again, extended suspensions of South African flights.
Both airlines had originally planned to resume flights between the UK and South Africa from early June, after more than five months of not flying to our shores, but the date has been pushed out.
The good news is that the latest suspension extension does offer hope for the airlines operating soon enough, as the UK’s ‘traffic light’ risk assessment system remains subject to change.
Business Insider SA reporting below:
But where earlier periods of suspension ranged from one to three months at a time, the latest extension will only last for two to three weeks.
Virgin Atlantic now plans to fly from Heathrow to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International on 10 June. British Airways is selling tickets for the same route, starting on 23 June…
South Africa, along with 39 other countries, remains on the UK’s red list. Non-citizen travellers from South Africa are prohibited from entering the UK and returning residents need to quarantine in a state-run hotel for ten days.
In other words, you’re still not going to the UK for a holiday.
The June 10 and June 23 dates are subject to change, with the COVID-19 risk assessed every three weeks.
Given that we look likely to drop into a harder lockdown pretty soon, as our infection numbers tick up, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a further suspension.
