It’s nearing that time of the year again, when we start to hear a cacophony of rumours about the next iPhone.
The iPhone 12 collection went down a treat, as did the exciting announcements from the Spring Loaded event, and now attention turns toward what features the next iPhone will be packing.
The first rumour is that it’s likely going to be called the iPhone 13, but we won’t count that as one of the seven.
The others, like speculation about the camera and more possible specs and features, come via CNET, which has gathered them from numerous sources across the interweb.
iPhone 13 might get a bigger battery
Both the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro can last a full day without a battery problem, and it’s rumoured that the next iPhone may come with a bigger battery, which provides for longer use before needing to recharge.
Pro Motion could come to the iPhone 13’s screen
The iPad Pro has had a 120Hz refresh rate with an LCD panel since 2017.
But now rumours suggest that the iPhone 13 might be getting a higher refresh rate OLED and will also need a 120Hz screen.
A higher refresh rate is a desirable feature because it makes everything look way better:
That sweeping generalization aside, animations and graphics look sharper, motion blur is reduced, games (especially those designed for high refresh rate screens) seem more immersive and vivid.
There are also rumours that the “Pro” models will get LTPO (low-temperature Polycrystalline oxide) displays, which can change between refresh rates on the fly without the need for extra display hardware.
The next iPhone might not have any ports
Apple got rid of the headphone jack back in 2016 with the iPhone 7 and ever since then, there have been rumours that Apple would one day make a completely portless phone.
So, the iPhone 13 might not come with a Lightning port.
The alternatives will probably be wireless MagSafe charging, like on the iPhone 12, except it will need to be more powerful to be a reasonable replacement to a physical charging cable.
Without a cable, there’s also the matter of data sharing:
Perhaps Apple is hoping 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0 and its U1 ultrawideband chip are those data-sharing replacements?
New cameras could come to the next iPhone
The rumours about the next iPhone’s camera include possible new lenses, new camera sensors, and wider adoption of sensor-based stabilisation:
The iPhone 13 Pro could get a larger sensor for its wide camera, which could incorporate sensor-based stabilisation, which is currently only on the iPhone 12 Pro Max model.
The iPhone 13 Pro is also rumoured to get the same or similar telephoto camera as the 13 Pro Max.
Additionally, there are rumours about a new ultrawide camera on the 13 that might get better low-light performance and a faster aperture lens.
The iPhone 13 could shoot portrait mode video
Portrait mode is the go-to feature to make your photos look more professional, blurring the background while leaving your subject clear and crisp, and now this feature might be added to video-taking, too.
The iPhone 13 might get better at astrophotography
Currently, you can mount the iPhone on a tripod and, in the darkest conditions, extend the night mode capture to up to 30 seconds to capture a decent image of the starry sky.
It’s possible that the camera on the next iPhone will allow astrophotography to still get activated in night mode, but extend the time beyond 30 seconds, or use computational photography to capture a better night sky or moon.
Touch ID could return to the iPhone
Since most of us are using face masks more often, the Face ID feature can be a bit annoying.
So, the iPhone 13 might alleviate these frustrations by possibly getting an under-the-display fingerprint reader.
The rumour also suggests, along with a 2019 patent illustration Apple filed, that the iPhone could be unlocked with a fingerprint touch anywhere on the screen instead of the single sensor location on Android phones.
