The last time Kevin Spacey appeared on the big screen (or the little screen) was in 2017.
That’s when the allegations of sexual misconduct emerged, with more than 20 men coming forward with stories of Spacey’s behaviour during his time at London’s Old Vic Theatre, between 1995 and 2013.
The movie Billionaire Boys Club, made prior to the accusations and released in 2018, took in $98 on its opening night in America.
Yes, the equivalent of around R1 350 across the whole of the US, although by the end of its run, the movie had taken in a total of $2,7 million, which is still dismal on an estimated budget of $15 million.
Since then, he’s only been seen sporadically in public, sometimes in rather unusual settings, but has always strenuously denied all the accusations made against him.
The 61-year-old will now return to acting, with a role as a detective in an Italian crime drama. The Guardian below:
Spacey, 61, will play a police officer investigating the case of a man – played by the director, Franco Nero – who can draw people by listening to their voices, despite not being able to see and is wrongly accused of sexually abusing children.
“I’m very happy Kevin agreed to participate in my film,” Nero told ABC News. “I consider him a great actor and I can’t wait to start the movie.”
The film will also feature Nero’s wife, Vanessa Redgrave, who will play the accused man’s piano teacher.
The film is titled L’uomo Che Disegnò Dio, or ‘The man who designed God’ according to Google Translate.
You have to feel that starring in a ‘paedophilia drama’ (The Guardian’s description) about a man wrongly accused of sexual abuse is sending a not so subtle message.
Along with the more than 20 accusers from his time at the Old Vic, Spacey has faced allegations of sexual battery in Los Angeles, and groping in Massachusetts.
Actor Anthony Rapp also filed a lawsuit last year, accusing Spacey of sexual assaults in the 1980s, whilst Rapp was a teenager.
L’uomo Che Disegnò Dio is slated as a low-budget indie film, so perhaps Nero reckons he can drum up some free PR by throwing Spacey into the mix.
He would be right, too.
