There’s a lot of hype for the Friends reunion special that will be released on May 27.
Fans have been frothing with excitement, but since a recent promotional video, there are some fans who are fretting, too.
In a video released on Wednesday to promote the HBO Max special, fans noticed that Matthew Perry was a little off.
The 51-year-old actor, who played the much-loved role of Chandler Bing, had a strange slur and odd gaze in the clip when he told a short story from his time on the legendary sitcom, Page Six reports.
While he and his former co-stars – Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc – are all a lot older now, it was more his laboured speech that stunned everyone.
His offishness was revealed when he was asked a question about whether he ever took a souvenir from the old set after the end of the show in 2004:
“I stole the cookie jar that had the clock on it,” he said, pronouncing a distinct “sh” sound at the beginning of “stole.”
You can see that clip of his slurred speech below:
Fans have cause for concern as Perry has struggled with substance abuse in the past.
After a jet ski accident in 1997, he became addicted to the synthetic opioid, Vicodin, and things got progressively worse from then:
“I was out of control and very unhealthy,” he told PEOPLE at the time.
By 2001, he was drinking copious amounts of vodka and showing up to work hungover.
It was so bad that multiple seasons of the show have been erased from his memory:
“I don’t remember three years of it,” he told BBC Radio 2 in 2016.
“Somewhere between Seasons 3 and 6 … I was a little out of it.”
In 2018, Perry spent three months in the hospital recovering from gastrointestinal surgery.
Luckily, the connections he made on Friends helped him through some of it, specifically the support from Cox.
We hope you are alright, Perry.
