The Blue Sky Theory, or Blue Sky Thinking, centres around one key premise – if you get the chance, go big.
Essentially, if there were no limits and no judgement, where could your imagination take you?
In Franschhoek, Anthonij Rupert Wyne is the perfect example of the Blue Sky Theory, with Gary Baumgarten leading the charge as the Managing Director for the past decade.
The wine estate encompasses six properties around the Western Cape, each of which produces a very distinct wine range, with a backstory to boot.
Local online fine wine marketplace Port2Port has put together a stunning video detailing the rise and rise of the estate, with Gary at the helm, as it produces South African wine that can more than compete on an international stage.
In addition to the fine wines, the estate has also pioneered some impressive firsts, like an electronic fly-wheel for pure gravity-fed winemaking, as well as a hydroelectric plant in the mountains to power some of the structures on the various farms.
Let’s give the floor to Gary, and a wonderful video feature, fittingly titled ‘The Blue Sky Theory’:
That’s a Feelgood Friday video right there.
As Port2Port points out, Anthonij Rupert Wyne has something for everyone:
Rooderust in Darling is their workhorse, producing grapes for their sparkling wines, Optima and Sangiovese. Riebeeksrivier on the slopes of Kasteelberg in the Swartland is an unbelievable property producing Rhône style varietals with a specific focus on Syrah (obviously).
Altima [below] is cool climate and one of their show-stopper grape producers. Olifantskop in Wellington is a new addition to the portfolio, producing 42-year-old Cinsault and Sauvignon blanc, as well as Grenache for their Jean Roi premium Rosé.
La Garonne in Franschhoek used to be the old Graham Beck property and is situated right next to L’Ormarins – one of the original Franschhoek farms granted to French Huguenot, Jean Roi, in 1714.
Don’t forget that you can also go truffle hunting on Altima Estate, under the expert guidance of trufelau (truffle hunter) Hanene van Dyk and her Lagotto Romagnolo dogs.
You’ll find the full range of Anthonij Rupert Wyne on their online shop.
