After 109 years, the Titanic is set to return.
Although, this one will be a replica, and it will be permanently docked in a theme park called Romandisea in China.
The “Unsinkable Titanic”, as it has been called, is currently under construction in Daying County in Sichuan province (see above), and will be made in the exact image of the original sunken ocean liner, reports CNN.
At 269,06 metres in length and 28,19 metres wide, it will have the same amenities as its namesake, including banquet halls, theatres, observation decks, and a swimming pool.
The date for the debut has not been announced but when the time comes, guests will be able to pay to spend the night aboard the ship and feel what it must have been like to be a passenger on the Titanic.
The project has not been easy or cheap:
According to the AFP, it’s taken 23 000 tons of steel and cost one billion yuan ($153,5 million) to build the replica.
The South China Morning Post has a video with more information:
The real Titanic wreckage was located in 1985 by scientists led by American Robert Ballard and France’s Jean Jarry, located about 350 miles off the southeast coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
A letter in a bottle was also found in Canada in 2017, which is alleged to have been from a girl who was on the Titanic at the time it sank.
There is already a fair share of Titanic museums sharing knowledge about the tragedy, so it feels like this replica being in a theme park constitutes a darker side of the tourism industry.
Either way, we can probably expect a social media wave of the famous “I’m flying” scene with Jack and Rose holding each other at the front of the ship.
