We wish it wasn’t, but a new movie that Netflix has just released is based on a true story, straight out of South Africa.
The suspense thriller, I Am All Girls, which premiered on Netflix on May 14, follows a detective on the hunt to bring down a global child sex trafficking syndicate in the dying days of apartheid South Africa.
Local actress Hlubi Mboya plays the role of lead detective Ntombizonke, who works with her determined colleague Jodie Snyman (played by Erica Wessels) to seek justice while they battle their own dark secrets.
HITC has more:
In order to keep on the syndicate’s trail, the investigator must team up with the most unlikely of allies, a serial killer who also aims to bring down the criminal trafficking ring, albeit with slightly different methods.
The story is reportedly about Gert van Rooyen, a suspected paedophile and serial killer, who allegedly kidnapped around six girls between 1988 and 1989 with his accomplice Joey Haarhoff.
According to van Rooyen’s son, Flippie, three former National Party ministers were involved in this syndicate, too.
The only difference between what happened in the real story and the movie is perhaps how Gert van Rooyen died, but we won’t give away any spoilers:
Via CapeTalk, Mboya spoke more about the movie:
“It’s a very specific kind of genre movie… I am proud of the movie. I know it has a space in current-day South Africa, current-day Africa, current-day Earth. And I’m proud of that.
The way we handled the film was with the utmost care, fragility, vulnerability, and love.”
None of the stolen girls was apparently found, so the I Am All Girls is necessary to honour their stories, too.
