In 1979, on a mountainside near Resolven, in the south of Wales, the skeletal remains of a man were found.
That was more than four decades ago, but sadly the man has never been identified, and thus his family have never been notified of his death.
What makes this story of interest to South Africans is that items found alongside the man indicate links to this country, and now Locate International, a UK-based company dedicated to reviewing unsolved missing persons and unidentified body cases, is reaching out for help.
According to IOL, Locate’s Emma Tilley says the man is “believed to have been born between the World Wars and was therefore aged between 40 and 60 at the time of his death”.
Tilley added that he would likely have walked with a limp, given that his right leg was fused at the knee.
He has been dubbed ‘Glamorgan Man’.
So, about those items linked to South Africa:
“Although no return ticket was traced, he had South African Airways timetables for 1978. On one were hand-written notes, indicating that he was planning a return flight from London to Johannesburg and then an onward internal flight to Durban.
“He also had a Salvation Testament with the name ‘D Malan’ and the address PO Box Randburg, Johannesburg, South Africa on the flyleaf.”
…“A commemorative bookmark for a Christian mission conducted in King William’s Town by ‘Rhodes Varsity Trekkers’ which was held at Easter (April 9 -17) 1960 was also found,“ Tilley said.
Enquiries in the Randburg area haven’t borne fruit, but there’s still a decent amount to go on here.
Tilley is asking anybody who attended Rhodes University in 1960 to rack their brains, as well as anybody who can recall somebody going to Wales in 1978 or 1979, who was then never heard from again.
If any of that rings a bell, you can mail investigations@locate.international, and perhaps you will help solve the decades-old mystery of the man on the mountain.
