Jeff Bezos, the richest person in the world, worth a fair fortune of $193 billion (around R2,7 trillion), does not have a yacht of his own.
This is absurd, really, considering how big boats are often the accessories of the outstandingly rich.
I guess Bezos has realised the travesty of the situation and is now commissioning not one, but two yachts to make up for the lost time.
One will be a massive 127-metre luxury mega-yacht, and the second will be a “support yacht” with a helipad.
Ain’t no mountain high enough, ain’t no river wide enough…
All of this news comes from an excerpt from Brad Stone’s book, Amazon Unbound, with details published in Bloomberg Businessweek on Wednesday:
…A new creation was secretly taking shape: a 127-metre-long, three-mast schooner about which practically nothing was known, even in the whispering confines of luxury boat builders—except that upon completion, it will be one of the finest sailing yachts in existence.
Oceanco was also building Bezos an accompanying support yacht, which had been expressly commissioned and designed to include—you guessed it—a helipad.
The helipad is a necessary addition as Bezos’ girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez, is a helicopter pilot and Stone reports that Bezos has taken flying lessons as well.
While we’re on the subject of expensive flying vehicles, the Amazon CEO does also own a private jet through his holding company, Poplar Glen, worth an estimated US$65 million (around R930 million).
According to Business Insider, Bezos has always fancied being out at sea:
Throughout the summer of 2019, he and Sanchez were spotted aboard a yacht belonging to entertainment mogul David Geffen, and then a yacht owned by fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.
Earlier this year, the couple was spotted aboard another yacht in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Call it an uber-rich man’s midlife crisis, or a spending flurry to make retirement that much more exciting, but this addition is just in time for when Bezos steps down from his position as Amazon’s CEO.
Then again, maybe it has something to do with compensating for a comment that Elon Musk made about his manhood.
