Caitlyn Jenner has a rather problematic take on transgendered girls playing sports at school.
You would expect a person who has personal experience with both professional sports and the challenges of being transgender to get it, but I guess not.
The debate in America over whether or not trans girls should be allowed to play sports with girls who identify with the gender they were assigned at birth has been raging for a while now with folks like human pond scum, Piers Morgan, weighing in to give his unsolicited opinion on the matter.
Jenner believes that if you’re born as a biological boy then you shouldn’t be allowed to compete in girls’ sports at school- because of “fairness” and “protecting the integrity of girls’ sports”.
She was caught by TMZ with her dog in a parking lot in Malibu, where they asked her to weigh in on the issue.
Here’s the video:
Her statement stands in stark contrast with that of Gavin Newsom (the governor of California), with whom she is in political competition. He is in support of trans rights.
Look, the issue is terribly complicated.
But, Jenner’s ‘fairness’ argument doesn’t really hold up once you bring science into it.
Scientists are saying that it is not a general rule that trans girls perform better in athletics because of naturally higher testosterone levels:
There are studies examining this topic – and they suggest that while, yes, trans women have tended to perform better against their cisgender counterparts in certain activities – running events appear to be the big one – it’s not conclusive that their testosterone levels alone are the sole cause for that … and it’s not always the case either.
Here’s more about all of this from a trans doctor:
I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ll see of statements like Jenner’s as the debate rages on.
