The sheer number of successful cash-in-transit heists in South Africa really is worrying.
A shootout between the Rustenburg Flying Squad and suspects that ended with one person dead, and a chilled daylight heist at a petrol station in Roodepoort, are just two of the videos that we featured in 2020, among many more.
In February of this year, a cash-in-transit guard was hijacked, kidnapped, forced to remove cash from several ATMs, and then let go with explosives strapped to his body. This raised alarm bells, with criminologist Dr Hennie Lochner stating that it shows an escalation in tactics, and things are likely to get worse.
It’s no wonder that the stress of being a cash-in-transit security officer is through the roof.
When videos of cash-in-transit heists are released they usually show the heist from outside of the vehicle.
A recently released video of dashcam footage from inside an armoured vehicle, per Insider, shows the intense moment a gang of armed robbers launched their attack.
The incident took place in Pretoria on April 22.
The shooting starts just after the 1-minute mark:
The level of calm and quick thinking displayed by those security officers is off the charts.
Towards the end of the video, you will have seen the driver stopping the van and taking the rifle from his colleague.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo explains what happened next.
“The driver of the CIT vehicle managed to evade the robbers for a while but later stopped in wait for the robbers. The robbers fled without taking any money. No arrests have yet been made.”
Photos taken in the aftermath show the extent to which the vehicle was damaged during the attack.

The security officers haven’t been identified yet.
Whoever they are, they’ve both earned Bell’s.
