OneDayOnly, South Africa’s one-stop online shop for daily deals, has been tracking the shopping habits of 9 000 South Africans who like to shop with them.
They revealed some results from their ODOmeter yesterday, and Stuff has taken the time to reflect on them.
Although the stats don’t reflect the shopping habits of the entire country, as they are only from a small handful of South African online shoppers, the results are worth a closer look nonetheless.
One interesting find is that it looks like older age groups are finding comfort where they once didn’t by making greater use of online shopping.
Not that 35-54 is old, just in an older age range comparatively.
Laurian Venter, the director at OneDayOnly, breaks it down for us:
“The 25 – 34-year-old age bracket is down 4% from the last ODOmeter, while the 35 – 44 and 45 – 54 age brackets are up 2% respectively. Although this may look like the younger age group is shopping less, it is possible that this could be linked to the effects of the long-term lockdown, and an indicator of the 35 – 54-year-old bracket becoming more comfortable with making more frequent purchases online.”
The main takeaway from the ODOmeter is that people are most interested in shopping for tech online compared to clothing, food, and alcohol, among other categories.
Take a look at this infographic for more on that:
If that’s too small for you, see the full image here.
Venter agrees that “tech is where it’s at, and [she] thinks that tech shoppers are savvy shoppers”.
According to Jessica van der Westhuyzen, Digital and Growth Marketer at OneDayOnly, most people buying tech are doing so using cash and credit cards, instead of using credit to pay over time.
Shoppers are also doing their research online, which means that OneDayOnly knows how to get you to spend on the things you’ve been sussing out.
Who’s the savvy one now?
She adds more:
“What we often do is look at top Google Search and list those deals the next day, and they’ll sell out. If you’re searching for it, you’ll have the money to spend on it,” van der Westhuyzen says.
I better delete my search history for properties along the Atlantic Seaboard, then.
