Hang on, is that shirtless man wielding a flagstick?
You bet he is, and that’s just one part of what makes this video, straight out of Vereeniging, so unique.
I still think the Kyalami Estate sword fight of January 2020 is the wildest public brawl I’ve seen in recent times, but let’s not detract from what happened at the Maccauvlei Golf Club last Friday.
During a fundraising golf day for the Laerskool Vryheidsmonument grade sevens, two men became involved in a nasty punchup.

‘Hectic’ is correct.
That first flagstick swing actually sounds like a semi-decent drive.
I know this is terrible, and we shouldn’t celebrate or condone violence, but the flagstick gets me every time.
News24 spoke with Maccauvlei general manager Leon Kruger (or Deon, depending on which news site you trust), who said a lost phone is what kickstarted the incident:
He said one of the men had lost his device along the course, and had been looking for it throughout the day. A caddy had found the phone, but one of the men had allegedly hidden it from the owner. He eventually returned it.
“There were two groups, one behind the other, on the course. Someone in the first group lost their phone. When they asked the second group if they had seen the phone, they denied having it. That’s when things then got out of hand.”
Maybe the ‘Find my Phone’ feature isn’t available in Vereeniging?
Kruger later added that alcohol played a massive role, with the groups drinking on the course and both men “incredibly wobbly on their feet”.
Surita Pita, on behalf of Laerskool Vryheidsmonument, said the men involved in the fight weren’t parents of children at the school.
