The 2017 action-comedy The Hitman’s Bodyguard was a reasonably solid box office success, grossing $180 million worldwide, so I guess it was only a matter of time until a sequel arrived on our screens.
That sequel, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, is almost here, and would have been finished earlier if production hadn’t been halted due to COVID-19.
Originally slated for release in August 2020, the date was first pushed back to August of this year, before being brought forward to June 16 in US cinemas in order to capitalise on America’s summer movie rush post-COVID-19 vaccine.
Starring alongside Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackon is Salma Hayek, with this from Collider:
The world’s most lethal odd couple – bodyguard Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) and hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) – are back on another life- threatening mission. Still unlicensed and under scrutiny, Bryce is forced into action by Darius’s even more volatile wife, the infamous international con artist Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek).
As Bryce is driven over the edge by his two most dangerous protectees, the trio get in over their heads in a global plot and soon find that they are all that stand between Europe and a vengeful and powerful madman (Antonio Banderas).
Added bonus – there’s even a little Morgan Freeman in the mix, although he doesn’t crop up in the trailer.
Richard E. Grant will also return in his role as Seifert:
You know what you’re getting, from Ryan Reynolds and the movie itself, so I don’t think there will be too many surprises here.
I would also like to take this opportunity to save you from watching Thunder Force on Netflix, starring Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer, which is absolutely horrific.
Skip at all costs.
