Here, have some Thursday to the face.
Well done on navigating the week thus far, and to help you soldier on until tomorrow at midday (Cape Town, we don’t work past midday on a Friday), let’s cast our minds way, way back.
Fine, Lewis Capaldi’s appearance on The Graham Norton Show is actually only from January last year, but as anybody who has slogged through the past 15 or so months will tell you, that’s basically a lifetime ago.
For those who don’t know, Capaldi is a Scottish singer-songwriter who has achieved remarkable success over the past two years, with ‘Someone You Loved’ topping the UK Singles Chart for seven weeks, as well as reaching number one on the Billboard Top 100 in the US.
A reminder, in case you can’t place the tune:
It was played pretty much nonstop on every South African radio station for months, so I will assume it rings a bell.
What really makes Capaldi so enduring is his down to earth persona, and sense of humour, and that was on full display during his appearance on Graham’s show.
He’s clearly not flustered to be appearing alongside Hollywood heavyweights like Margot Robbie and Jim Carrey, as well as British actor Daniel Kaluuya and British model/actress Jodie Turner-Smith.
Go on, Lewis:
Think what you want about his music, but he seems like the kind of guy that would be great fun to share a beer with.
He’s built a brand out of taking the piss out of himself, like this video from 2019 that comes with the following description:
Head back to Lewis Capaldi’s hometown of Bathgate to visit the places that made him and find out whether his fame has gone to his head. This is Becoming Lewis Capaldi.
There’s a real element of David Brent about this one:
Thanks, Lewis.
All the best for what lies ahead, and don’t worry about the haters:
