It’s a tale as old as time.
Well, not really, because the first iPhone came out in 2007, but the Apple versus Android debate continues to rage on.
Except if you’re a teenager in the US, with a new survey showing that there is a clear and decisive winner. ‘Taking Stock With Teens’ is a semi-annual report produced by Piper Sandler, which has been running for more than two decades.
The survey was carried out on more than 7 000 teens, with an average age of 16, and 88% of the respondents said they owned an iPhone.
In addition to that, 90% of respondents said they expected an iPhone to be their next phone. As Screen Rant points out, these numbers are very, very good for Apple.
The same report, 10 years ago, showed that just 17% of US teens owned an iPhone, and 37% intended to purchase one in the six months that followed:
Not only does it show absolute dominance for the age category in its home market, but it suggests hugely strong future promise within Generation Z too. Something drastic would have to happen in the midterm for Apple to lose its stranglehold on this market segment.
For Google’s Android platform and, indeed, Android smartphone manufacturers, the picture is obviously less rosy. Having only 10 percent of the market in what is essentially a two-horse race is one thing, but having that shared among manufacturers — themselves competing against each other — is quite another.
Here’s something you won’t hear every day – I think the teens are on the money here.
Once you own an iPhone, it’s a helluva thing to switch back to anything else, and why would you?
Apple has an entire ecosystem of sorts, whereas the Android platform “is at an inherent disadvantage in not being able to control the overall brand in the same way — or, for that matter, to shape the ecosystem entirely to the functional preferences of one or the other”.
Oh, your devices don’t seamlessly interact with one another without any hassle for the user? Shem.
South African ownership stats will obviously differ greatly from those in the US, in general, and amongst teens, with some arguing that it’s a cost thing, rather than preference.
There are ways to ensure you reduce what you have to fork out for your latest Apple accessory.
Digicape, South Africa’s largest independent Apple retailer, offers unrivalled product knowledge and range, with a ‘Virtual Shopping Assistant‘ on hand to guide you through any potential purchases.
If you’re not giving your old device to your teen, Digicape also allows you to trade in up to five old devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or Apple TV products all qualify) to score store credit and discounts.
It’s one thing to wear dad jeans and crack lame jokes, but with tech, you have to draw the line somewhere.
