The ongoing battle between those trying to secure Ghislaine Maxwell’s release from prison on bail, and those who believe she should remain behind bars, took a particularly nasty turn this week.
In one corner is Maxwell’s family, along with her lawyers, who have consistently hit out at the conditions under which she is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Centre (MDC) in New York, along with her treatment by guards.
In the other corner are federal prosecutors, who have said that there is nothing untoward in the treatment that Maxwell receives, before launching an extraordinary rebuke this week.
Responding to a complaint sent to a federal judge in February by a lawyer for Maxwell, prosecutors laid to into the British ‘socialite’ (that seems to be the going descriptor for the time being) and her potty training.
The Daily Beast below:
In their Tuesday filing, they say Maxwell is a healthy weight, doesn’t have any noticeable hair loss, received the COVID vaccine, and seems to sleep through nighttime checks—but has been warned of cleanliness issues herself…
The government’s letter added that after Maxwell’s complaint of abuse, MDC staff ordered the heiress to “clean her cell because it had become very dirty.”
“Among other things, MDC staff noted that the defendant frequently did not flush her toilet after using it, which caused the cell to smell,” the filing continues. “In addition, the defendant had not cleaned her cell in some time, causing the cell to become increasingly dirty. MDC staff directed the defendant to clean her cell in response to the smell and the dirtiness, not as retaliation for complaining about a particular search.”
During our Day Zero panic, we all subscribed to the ‘if it’s yellow, let it mellow’ mantra, but one gets the impression prosecutors are referring to a different bodily function.
In response to complaints that conditions are making it hard for Maxwell to prepare for her court case, prosecutors also pointed out that Maxwell has access to both a desktop computer and laptop for “13 hours a day, seven days a week” and “continues to receive more time to review discovery than any other inmate”.
Amidst claims that jail staff had deleted some of her emails, a review by the MDC showed that Maxwell herself had deleted emails and archived others.
Whilst it won’t affect charges against her, a recent lawsuit filed against Jeffrey Epstein’s estate, alleging that Epstein and Maxwell threatened to feed a sex trafficking victim to alligators if she spoke up, isn’t going to sway public favour in her direction.
Perhaps Maxwell is trying her utmost to make her prison conditions seem horrid in the hopes that her legal team can secure her release on bail.
If that’s the case, she may have met her match with these federal prosecutors, who appear to be ready to fight nasty with nasty.
Maxwell is due to go on trial later this year, and will face child sex trafficking charges, among others.
