Divorce can end with people houseless, childless, and even crownless.
A pageant queen in Sri Lanka knows what I mean.
Pushpika De Silva, a pageant queen who won the title of Mrs. Sri Lanka, says she sustained some injuries after her crown was pulled from her head and her win revoked by the previous Mrs. Sri Lanka.
The former pageant winner and current Mrs. World, Caroline Jurie, yanked the crown off De Silva’s head and gave it to the first runner-up instead.
Why? Because of an alleged divorce:
“There is a rule that you have to be married and not divorced, so I am taking my first steps in saying that the crown goes to the first runner-up,” Jurie tells the audience.
You can watch the drama unfold around the 1:15 mark below:
De Silva leaves without saying a thing, but she hasn’t kept quiet for long.
People reports that De Silva posted a response on Facebook shortly after the incident, mentioning how she “suffered injuries” when the crown was “snatched” from her head:
“As I write this, I responsibly say that I am not a divorced woman,” she wrote in a statement translated from Sinhala. “If I am divorced, I challenge them to submit my divorce papers.”
“So, even though that symbolic crown has been snatched from my head, I would like to inform you that I have already taken the necessary legal action for the injustice and insult that has taken place,” De Silva continued, adding that “a real queen is not a woman who snatches another woman’s crown, but a woman who secretly sets the other woman’s crown!!”
Some outlets report that she needed hospital treatment for injuries caused when the crown was taken off.
Who knows what kind of money or publicity was involved for Mrs World to wrongly state that De Silva was divorced. It’s honestly beyond me.
Anyway, the Mrs. World organisation is looking into the matter, and it appears likely that they will give De Silva her crown back.
