Cape Town’s ruthless and extensive network of gangs has been well documented, with violence increasing across the region as rival factions go to war.
There have been a number of hits on prominent gang members, and in many areas lockdown has helped kingpins cement their power, forcing residents to stash and transport drugs in exchange for food and security.
Mitchells Plain is one such area, with an estimated 20 gangs in operation. A spate of gang killings has recently spilt onto the street, claiming the lives of innocent children and bystanders.
There is no escape from the violence, and the SAPS Anti-Gang Unit appears largely powerless to protect the community from the powerful criminal enterprises.
Recently, Carte Blanche spoke with members of the community, and went on dawn patrol with a new private security company that has taken it upon itself to make inroads against the gangs.
