UPDATE: There has now been a U-turn on the earlier announcement:
See this tweet:
The dept. says what the minister tried to say is that those outlets; bars & restaurants selling booze are not allowed to sell to people who are taking that off-site, breaking licensing conditions. #alcohol @etvNewsSA

So pack the boots once more, and take your liquor on your weekend getaway, I guess…
Happy fake Friday, everyone!
Before you head off on your four-day weekend, don’t forget to take the booze out of your boot.
Yep, it is official and crystal clear now – no transportation of alcohol anywhere in the country for four days.
According to The Citizen, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, addressed the media this morning:
“People are not allowed to carry alcohol from one place to another as of midnight tonight [Thursday] to midnight on Monday,” she said…
“The police will be doing road blocks and stuff. [People] are not allowed to be carrying alcohol from the one place to the other.”
You can guarantee this is going to anger South Africans who rushed out yesterday and today to stock up for the long weekend, only now to be told they could face punishment if found transporting any alcohol.
Alcohol sales will resume on Tuesday, although you are allowed to drink at licensed establishments from Friday through to Sunday.
The curfew remains from midnight until 4AM.
Stay safe, folks.
