Is there a better Thursday in the year than the Thursday before the Easter weekend?
I’m not sure there is, and here we are, so let us rejoice.
The more astute out there will notice that the man in the image above isn’t actually Prince, the ‘Purple Rain’ magician, but rather Dave Chappelle, as part of a sketch on Comedy Central’s Chappelle’s Show.
It’s one of the show’s most iconic sketches, and whilst it sounds completely outlandish, it’s actually remarkably similar to what really played out.
Yes, Prince did challenge Eddie Murphy, and his brother Charlie, to a basketball game at his home in 1985, and Prince wore his typically flamboyant outfit throughout.
According to Eddie Murphy, who told the story recently ahead of the release of Coming 2 America, all the musician changed was his shoes.
This from CinemaBlend:
“That is totally and absolutely accurate… My brother was like, ‘Alright, it’s going to be shirts against blouses.’ [Laughs] And the blouses won, they beat the shit out of us.”
Also there that night was Micki Free, who recounted his memories to Esquire:
“All I remember is when Prince made that first shot, it was all-net. I’m looking at him make shot after shot, like, “What the hell?”
Then at the end they really did make us pancakes—blueberry pancakes. And they were good! Hanging out with Prince was magical.”
Watching the sketch, and knowing that this stuff actually happened, just makes it even funnier.
Enjoy, and enjoy that long, sweet weekend ahead:
