It has been almost a year since Collins Khosa died at his home in Alexandra township on Good Friday, after being allegedly beaten by defence force (SANDF) soldiers.
He was sitting in his yard, enjoying a beer with his brother-in-law, when two soldiers spotted them, entered the premises, and confronted them. When Khosa defended his right to have a drink in his own yard, things became physical.
According to the evidence given in court in a trial that commenced after his family opened a murder case at Alexandra police station, Khosa had his hands held behind his back as SANDF members allegedly choked, beat, and slammed him against a wall.
He would die in his wife’s arms in his bathroom, unable to speak or move.
The National Prosecuting Authority is still investigating the incident – which is just one of the things that News24 goes into in their new documentary, Slain by Soldiers: The Collins Khosa Story.
Here that is in full:
Khosa wasn’t the only one who fell victim to brutality from law enforcement during lockdown.
Even the United Nations slammed heavy-handed police action in South Africa, calling it “one of the worst” during the global pandemic.
We’ve since entered calmer times than those of the first 21 days of the national lockdown, but the battle is far from over.
