The Porsche above, with a menacing-looking Pablo Escobar climbing out of the driver’s side, could be yours for a decent chunk of change.
It looks very different now, having been restored to its original condition, but it’s the real deal.
Escobar was not only a car collector but also someone who once actively participated in motorsports. Needless to say, going up against him added another level of danger to racing.
He’s not the sort of guy you want to run off the road.
The 1974 Porsche 911 RSR’s main claim to fame, apart from its former owner, is its role in the very first International Race Of Champions.
It was driven by Brazilian Formula 1 legend Emerson Fittipaldi.
Despite starting the race in 11th position, it managed to fight its way to the front of the pack, before veering off track and springing a fuel tank leak.
That’s a double whammy for car enthusiasts looking to add something special to the garage – a 1970s-era race car that was once owned by one of the most infamous criminals of the 20th century, with motoring history behind it worth bragging about on your next weekend meet.
While we’re on the topic of famous Porsches, Diego Maradona’s Porsche is currently up for auction. I’ll be taking bets on which Porsche has the most leftover ‘powder’ residue.
According to Robb Report, if you’re keen to get your hands on Escobar’s car up for sale through Atlantis Motor Group, be prepared to drop $2,2 million (around R33 million):
Escobar personally drove the car in a few championships in Colombia, although he raced it with the 395 body. It would remain in his collection until he died in 1993, after which it was returned to the US and restored.
If you’re interested in the specs, it’s powered by a 2 807 cc, air-cooled horizontally flat-six engine, delivering 280 bhp at 8000rpm, with 215ft-lbs at 6300 rpm of torque, taking you from zero to just shy of 100 in 4,5 seconds.
It’s a beast, but you’d expect that from a racing car.
