It’s been a while since I stumbled across a decent crime thriller.
Most of the newer ones tend to favour action over plot.
The Little Things seems more nuanced, making it considerably more creepy. Jared Leto as the villain doesn’t hurt the creep factor, either.
It’s set in the 1990s in Los Angeles. The basic plot sees Joe “Deke” Deacon (Denzel Washington), a deputy sheriff, teaming up with Sgt. Jim Baxter (Rami Malek) to hunt down a killer that has been terrorising the city.
Their case is threatened when Baxter learns that Deke’s past isn’t what he thought it was, as disturbing secrets begin to surface.
Yep, that’s three Academy Award winners in one film.
Check it the trailer:
Per BBC, Rami Malek explains why he simply couldn’t turn down the role:
“This character, starting out with this really altruistic perspective and having that type of conviction turned into obsession… Johnny’s script was one of those… that you just fly through.”
Washington adds: “If it ain’t on the page, it ain’t on the stage… I just read the script and found it interesting.”
Jared Leto has recently started to realise that he’s being cast in dark roles for the most part (John Lennon’s killer Mark David Chapman in Chapter 27, Paul Allen in American Psycho, Joker in Suicide Squad).
“There was a moment where I did think, I’ve kind of walked on the darker side of the universe a lot in my career, maybe it’s time to not do that again. But after seeing the opportunity here, I just couldn’t say no”.
It looks gripping, and well worth setting aside an evening to break out the popcorn, turn off the lights, and scare yourself silly.
The film was released in the US back in late January, so I’m sure you can find it if you do some digging around.
