When I read about South African lottery winners, I can’t help being at least a little bit jealous.
After all, who hasn’t wanted to rub a smidgeon of their newfound riches in their ex’s face?
Sometimes, you read about a winner and think it’s not going to end well, but in the case of South Africa’s latest multimillionaire lottery winner, that’s not the case.
The 30-year-old Polokwane man who won last week’s R51 million PowerBall jackpot seems to have it all figured out, and he also seems to be a really good person.
He spent R30 on tickets, picked his own numbers, and now he’s looking forward to a life of leisure.
Sorry, a life of helping others, reports TimesLIVE:
Speaking at the Ithuba offices on Monday, the 30-year-old said he can finally pursue his dream of becoming a social worker.
“I wanted to study for a qualification in social work after my matric, but unfortunately there was no money to send me to school so I had to look for a job so that I could help my family,” he said…
“Winning this money does not mean that I must abandon my dream. It was never just about me. It has always bothered me to see young children suffer in my neighbourhood. Their parents receive social grants for them but end up just wasting the money on their wants.
“I want to be able to offer effective and sustainable assistance to my community, and getting the social work qualification will help me do just that,” he said.
What an absolute hero.
As is standard with any lottery winner-related story, I must state that any sizeable win would result in my immediate resignation from any and all employment, so I have only respect for the man above.
He says he intends to invest “a significant portion of his winnings” and live off the interest.
In addition to finishing his studies so he can help his local community, he also intends to finish the house he started building for his family a few years back, having had to stop due to financial constraints:
“My father died recently before he could see the final product, I am grateful that my mother will get the opportunity to live in her dream house, as I intend to spend a portion of my winnings on the completion and furnishing of the house.”
How can you not be happy for this guy?
You’re also allowed to be a little bit jealous, of course.
