Hey folks, I thought we could touch base once more and circle back to David Blaine’s 2001 interview.
As per my previous email, just following up on the above?
Did the second email above find you well, or find you at all?
Kindest regards and best.
Now that we have the worst email clichés behind us, and in honour of the incessant chatter about the Harry and Meghan interview with Oprah which airs on Sunday (a warning that Seth will be all over that come Monday), we thought we would run a series focusing on awkward celeb interviews from years gone by.
To begin, let’s cast our minds back to that David Blaine interview, with the magician appearing on former brekkie show GMTV for a chat with Eamonn Holmes.
Roll tape:
What was all that about? In 2019, Blaine opened up about the interview, reports The Mirror:
After they were reunited on screen for the first time since that car-crash segment, David admitted to Eamonn that he wanted to make the This Morning host feel awkward to make a point.
“We were all talking in the green room before the show with all the guests’ friends and family,” David revealed.
“I noticed no-one was watching their friends go on, so I thought, ‘I’m going to make sure everyone looks”.
He went on: “I thought a card trick would be boring, it’s not going to stop the people in the green room from chatting.
“At the last minute I came up with that idea and thought it was funny.”
Cool story, bro.
In response, Holmes said that he was “glad one of us found it funny”, adding the interview “was wicked and cruel”, and “the longest six minutes of my life”.
Well done, David. I hope you’re happy.
Let’s end with a parody video where Blaine is the butt of the joke, just to even the playing field:
