Take A Tour Of Nettleton Road’s Spectacular ‘Iron Man Villa’ [Video]

It doesn't take much to work out why Pengilly House in Clifton also goes by the name 'Iron Man Villa'.

If you live in Clifton’s Nettleton Road, you know you’ve cracked the big time.

At one stage, it was ranked as the most expensive street in South Africa, and boasts the sort of properties that go for a cool R130 000-plus a night on Airbnb.

Imagine paying that for a single night’s stay somewhere?

Anyway, we were reminded of the so-called ‘Iron Man Villa’ by a Cape Town Etc article from earlier today, which detailed some of the unique features of the property, designed by local firm Peerutin.

The property is 60-metres wide and the house is divided both horizontally and vertically.

“The lower two levels containing ancillary and support spaces form the base for the upper two floors which house the main living, entertaining and sleeping spaces,” said Peerutin.

“The ‘base’, clad in sandstone, is articulated as an architectural expression of ‘mountain’ while the sinuous, curvilinear forms of the upper levels are designed to ‘float’ weightlessly above and mimic the undulating contours of the region,” added the architects.

It doesn’t take a genius to work out why it was given the name ‘Iron Man Villa’, although it also goes by Pengilly House, as it’s owned by London-based businessman Lloyd Pengilly.

All in all, there are six bedrooms, and six bathrooms, and two lifts to ferry you from one storey to the next.

Stairs are for peasants, remember?

This video, from May 2019, provides a pretty decent tour of the property:

You’ll be thrilled to know that Pengilly House also featured in the February 2020 wedding of influencer Bettina Looney and Carlos Segovia, which received a write-up on Harper’s BAZAAR.

Nah, you don’t care, and neither do we.

According to the latest rate card we could find on Azura Retreats, rental was a cool $20 000 a day in the 2018/2019 season.

Even if you split that 12 ways, it’s still a decent amount of coin.
