The year is 2026, South Africa is busy with its 17th COVID-19 vaccine rollout, and Karen from Facebook is waving around a post she printed about how the virus isn’t real and it’s a plot by the global elite to harvest our organs.
OK, it’s only 2021, which is already dragging on, but a recent meltdown at an unnamed Pick n Pay store perfectly illustrates how tough the ongoing battle against misinformation (and general stupidity) really is.
The clip began circulating earlier this week, and shows a woman refusing to wear a mask because it’s unconstitutional.
It appears she is referring to a ruling from June 2020, when a North Gauteng High Court found that certain aspects of our lockdown restrictions were unconstitutional, but the rules on wearing masks whilst in public have never been more clear.
There are no exceptions – wear the damn thing.

Say “you people” again, Karen – you’re really showing your true colours.
I’m also getting strong Chabad De La Fontaine vibes from her, and the speed-reading woman at the 50-second mark who managed to take in the contents of whatever paper is being waved around in a matter of seconds, before offering a thumbs-up.
If you can’t or won’t consider the health of your fellow South Africans, order your groceries online – we’ve even done a helpful comparison of the various services.
Ultimately, it’s the Pick n Pay staff who have been put at risk here, and verbally abused, for simply trying to do their jobs.
If you spot a Karen in her natural habitat (or a Ken – is that the male version?), be sure to capture the footage so that she may be held accountable.
