101 Dalmatians was already a bit of a weird idea for a film.
If you break it down to its essence, you watch a madwoman chasing puppies around for just over an hour so that she can murder them and turn them into a coat.
Great movie for kids…
The live-action spinoff, Cruella, looks like it’s going to be just as deranged, if not more so.
Emma Stone has been cast as Cruella de Vil, and the film is a coming of age evil tale that looks at her origin story.
It’s all very dark.
Here’s how The Verge describes it:
There’s a moment in the first trailer for Disney’s live-action Cruella movie when Emma Stone utters in a terrible faux British accent, “I am woman, hear me roar.”
It feels less like something Disney fans will remember from the iconic 101 Dalmatians villain, Cruella de Vil, and more like Jared Leto’s Joker telling Batman, “We live in a society.”
They’re not the only ones making that comparison, either, with Screen Rant and Harper’s thinking along similar lines.
See the trailer for yourself:
The film is set in 1970s London. Cruella is an aspiring punk designer (and a grifter) who is trying to get society’s wealthiest people to take notice of her and her designs.
There’s some concern that the protagonist will be more of an answer to the question of what Joker and Harley Quinn’s baby would be like, and less of a character in her own right.
I think it looks like a good time.
Cruella is set to be released on May 28 in theatres pandemic permitting, but it’s more likely to debut on Disney+.
