Thursdays are for throwbacks, and Fridays are good for a quick look at some movies and series due for release shortly.
It beats writing another story about empty promises at SONA.
Looks like we’re in for decent weather around Slaapstad, and the beaches are open again, so this may be a weekend spent outdoors.
No reason you can’t mark a few movies and series down for later, though, so let’s kick things off with The Verge’s list.
To start, there’s Moxie:
Based on the novel by Jennifer Mathieu, Moxie is about shy high school student Vivian (Hadley Robinson) whose mom (Amy Poehler) was a rebel back in the day (“When I was 16, all I cared about was smashing the patriarchy”).
The boys at Vivian’s high school are rude jerks who rate the girls based on their looks. She and the other girls at the school finally get fed up, and Vivian publishes a zine called Moxie to expose the bad behavior. Right on.
I’m currently rewatching Parks and Recreation, which makes for great background viewing, so sign me up for anything with Poehler attached:
This one hits Netflix on March 3.
Then there’s HBO’s The Nevers, which is only airing in April, but does look intriguing:
In the last years of Victoria’s reign, London is beset by the “Touched”: people — mostly women — who suddenly manifest abnormal abilities, some charming, some very disturbing.
Among them are Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), a mysterious, quick-fisted widow, and Penance Adair (Ann Skelly), a brilliant young inventor.
They are the champions of this new underclass, making a home for the Touched, while fighting the forces of… well, pretty much all the forces — to make room for those whom history as we know it has no place.
Not my cup of tea, but if you’re into the sci-fi drama style then off you pop:
A number of studios aired adverts during Super Bowl Sunday, and Forbes compiled a list of the best and the worst.
Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon was favourably received:
Disney’s upcoming animated film is headed to theaters and Disney+ on March 5th. It stars The Last Jedi alum Kelly Marie Tran as Raya and Awkwafina as her magical dragon. It looks charming and fun and the animation is gorgeous.
I can’t decide if I’ll see this in theaters or at home. Probably at home unless COVID-19 case counts are way down, though I very badly would like to support movie theaters and do enjoy the social-distancing experience.
I’m glad we could go through that thought process with you, Erik Kain.
Trailer time:
Looks decent, but it’s no The Lion King. I mean the 1994 one, when Disney peaked.
Finally, this one’s not a full trailer, but it will whet the whistle of M. Night Shyamalan fans.
Say his name out loud, it’s fun.
Then recall the time that Matthew Perry thought he was partying with Shyamalan, but wasn’t. Also fun.
Finally, observe the teaser released for Old:
The write-up is as follows:
This summer, visionary filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan unveils a chilling, mysterious new thriller about a family on a tropical holiday who discover that the secluded beach where they are relaxing for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly … reducing their entire lives into a single day.
Intriguing.
Handy tip, while we’re sharing – if I see a trailer I like, I add the movie or series IMDb page to a bookmarks folder, so that I don’t forget all about it months down the line when it comes out.
Use it, don’t use it.
Have a cracker of a weekend.
