Spurs manager Jose Mourinho is often accused of ‘parking the bus’, and favouring defensive prowess over attack, but last night’s FA Cup fifth-round showdown with Everton was a total humdinger.
The match finished 4-4 after 90 minutes, with Brazilian Bernard’s extra-time goal enough to seal the win for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, and a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Mourinho, having named Harry Kane on the bench, rolled out his big gun on the 53-minute mark, and it was Kane’s 83rd-minute goal that took the match to extra-time.
The official FA Cup highlights don’t include commentary, but do your best Martin Tyler impression every time the ball hits the back of the net and you should be alright.
Kane’s goal, his 209th in 318 appearances for Spurs, takes him into second place on their all-time goalscorers list, behind only Jimmy Greaves, who scored 266 times in 379 appearances between 1961 and 1970.
Elsewhere, likely Premier League champions Manchester City continued on their merry way, winning their 15th straight match in all competitions.
The club has set a new record for successive domestic wins by an English top-flight club, beating the previous best of 14, by Preston way back in 1891-92, and Arsenal in 1987-88.
Swansea City was no match for Pep Guardiola’s men, who won 3-1, and could easily have scored a few more:
There was a great deal of excitement as Percy Tau was named in Brighton’s starting lineup against Leicester City, but the South African couldn’t inspire his team to victory, with a 94th-minute winner by Kelechi Iheanacho booking Brendan Rodgers’ side a place in the quarters:
In the night’s other FA Cup clash, Sheffield United, growing in confidence but still rooted to the foot of the Premier League table, beat 10-man Bristol City 1-0, with Billy Sharp scoring from the penalty spot.
Attention now turns to this weekend’s Premier League fixtures, with the pick of the lot seeing Manchester City at home to Spurs.
