Oscar Pistorius’ murder of Reeva Steenkamp is almost certainly the most internationally recognised South African trial in recent history.
Justice was eventually served, and we can only hope the world watches on as closely if the likes of Jacob Zuma are ever held to account.
You probably haven’t heard the names Mosa Ntsibande and Hlengiwe Msimango before, but there are striking similarities between the killing of Msimango and Steenkamp.
So much so that the lawyer representing the family of Msimango, Matthew Temlett, says it is “very reminiscent of the Oscar Pistorius case”.
News24 reports:
Ntsibande, 33, shot and killed his wife, Hlengiwe Msimango, 29, at their Norkem Park home on 3 August 2020
Msimango [with Ntsibande below in an undated photo] sustained two bullet wounds to her upper body and died on the scene. Her body was found inside their home.
Ntsibande allegedly used his licensed firearm. He claimed he was awoken by people in his yard and went outside armed with his gun to inspect.
On his return to the house, he saw a shadow in their bedroom and shot at it twice, hitting Msimango.
As things stand, the Kempton Park Regional Court has referred the case against Ntsibande to the Director of Public Prosecutions, which will decide on whether the trial will be heard in Kempton Park or in the Gauteng High Court.
Temlett with more on what happened on August 3:
“It is not in dispute that he killed the deceased. It is now whether the killing was intentional or not. His version is that there was an intruder, he went to inspect and when he came to the bedroom, he saw a figure in the bedroom and opened fire…”
“The onus is on him to prove his defence and the State has to prove that he had the intention to kill the deceased,” Temlett added.
Thandi Nkumane, Msimango’s aunt, said that seeing the man who killed her niece in the courtroom was traumatising, and that Ntsibande “hasn’t shown any remorse”.
Ntsibande is currently out on R10 000 bail, with a date for court proceedings still to be set.
