Residents of Kraaifontein, Cape Town, are living in fear once more, as violence between warring gangs spills out on to the streets.
On Tuesday night, the alleged leader of the notorious 27s gang, William “Red” Stevens, was shot and killed.
Stevens stood accused of murdering the man dubbed ‘the Steroid King’, Brian Wainstein, at his Constantia home in August 2017.
Alleged underworld boss Mark Lifman and gang leader Jerome “Donkie” Booysen were his co-accused, with the three due to appear on February 9.
Stevens is believed to have been shot and killed at around 6:45PM, with three suspects fleeing the scene.
Following that, residents captured a number of showdowns between rival gangs, with gunfire ringing out.
Journalist Julian Jansen shared three videos on Facebook, which News24 has condensed below:
As always, it’s the residents left picking up the pieces:
The community is tense at the moment. We have been left in the middle of this battle. We don’t know what’s going to happen next,” community activist Terence Crowster told News24.
Crowster also runs educational programmes for children in the area, but he’s had to make new plans to keep the children safe.
“We have soup kitchens every day, but now we’ve had to move to another location because of the gangs fighting,” he said.
According to Western Cape police spokesperson Andre Traut, law enforcement has increased its presence in the area, but no arrests have yet been made in connection with Stevens’ murder.
Our lockdowns have only served to further strengthen the power of various gang kingpins, so I don’t expect anybody will be coming forward to share details with police.
Most likely, this will continue to be settled through bloodshed.
