In a blow for democracy in Myanmar, the military staged a coup on Monday, detaining elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, declaring a state of emergency, and taking over governance.
The army is alleging “election fraud”, after Aung San Suu Kyi’s party’s landslide victory in the November election.
Aung San Suu Kyi released a statement declaring that the military was trying to reimpose a dictatorship, and urged the “people not to accept this, to respond and wholeheartedly to protest against the coup by the military”.
Some background on the coup, with footage, and statements from Myanmar citizens describing the situation as their “worst nightmare”:
Amidst the chaos, an aerobics video appears to have been filmed as the coup was underway, capturing a surreal scene of a military takeover set to a lively electronic song, with an upbeat dance happening in the foreground.
Not your average coup coverage:
Per The Guardian, the dancer has been identified as Khing Hnin Wai, who says that she has filmed many videos in that location before:
…Khing Hnin Wai appears to continue her workout as black SUVs drive up to a security checkpoint on the road leading to the Assembly of the Union complex behind her.
The bizarre scene has been compared to shows like Black Mirror. Reddit users have already edited her dancing into videos of other historical or political moments like the storming of the US Capitol:
Meanwhile, the situation in Myanmar remains tense, with citizens unsure of what will happen next, amidst fears that the country will return to full military rule, which until the election, had been in effect for around half a century.
