If you had February 8 down as the day that you would swear off WhatsApp, due to those changes in how data is shared between the messaging app and Facebook, you should know you have more time.
After a massive backlash across the globe, WhatsApp announced that date would be pushed back to May 15, with the company adding that there’s been “much confusion” and “a lot of misinformation causing concern” around the update.
We won’t revisit the changes that will now kick in on May 15, but our readers will already know that Seth made the switch to Telegram at the start of the year, outlining why he did so here.
You do you, but just remember that switching to Telegram for privacy reasons, while still regularly using Facebook and Instagram, won’t achieve very much.
But here you are, and you want to take that WhatsApp chat history over to Telegram. In a blog post rolled out yesterday, Telegram outlined how to do this:
To move a chat from WhatsApp on iOS, open the Contact Info or Group Info page in WhatsApp, tap Export Chat, then choose Telegram in the Share menu.
On Android, open a WhatsApp chat, tap ⋮ > More > Export Chat, then choose Telegram in the Share menu.
You know what makes things really easy? Two brief videos showing that in action.
First up, WhatsApp on iOS to Telegram:

Easy does it.
The full Telegram blog post also details sections like ‘Control Your Digital Footprint’, ‘Improved Voice Chats’, and ‘Reporting Fake Channels’.
Read that here.
By the way, you can turn off notifications for when your contacts join Telegram in ‘Settings’. Do it – here’s how.
