I was a touch concerned in 2020, that with the pandemic halting filming on several projects, we’d be looking at a pretty dry year when it comes to cinema.
Ask Tom Cruise. He had a lot of feelings about that topic.
That concern, it seems, was unfounded.
Instead, the lineup of movies set for release over the coming months is impressive, with few films on Rolling Stone’s list of the best that I don’t want to see.
So, if you’re looking for something to look forward to, here you go. We have picked five from their full list of 50.
Malcolm & Marie (February 5, 2021)
John David Washington and Zendaya play Malcolm, a film director, and Marie, an actress.
The film takes place over the course of one night from the time that the couple return from a film premiere, following which their night turns into ” a long night of old grievances being aired and relationship problems coming to a head”.
I’m told that it’s worth it if only for the performances.
The World to Come (February 12, 2021)
Set in 18th-century upstate New York, Abigail (Katherine Waterston) lives a boring life with her husband (Casey Affleck), until Taillie (Vanessa Kirby), the wife of a new neighbour (Christopher Abbott), comes along, and a romance blossoms.
The Velvet Underground (TBA)
Fans of The Velvet Underground can take a breath. This isn’t a biopic, and it thankfully isn’t in the hands of the monster who decided to dishonour David Bowie with that abomination Stardust.
Instead, Todd Haynes gives us the inside story of the band that became the standard entertainment at Andy Warhol’s Factory, a soundtrack to late-Sixties underground hipsterism, and finally one of the most influential post-punk bands in history.
Nobody (April 2, 2021)
Here’s one for those of you who like a little action in your films.
Bob Odenkirk plays a family man with a secret past as an “auditor” for a not-so-nice black-ops organisation.
After his house is burgled, attracting the attention of a couple of Russian mobsters, he decides to bring his skills out of retirement.
The French Dispatch (TBA)
Another Wes Anderson movie! This time it’s about journalists working in the French offices of an American newspaper.
The French Dispatch boasts an all-star cast comprising Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, Lea Seydoux, Elisabeth Moss, Jeffrey Wright, Benicio Del Toro, Kate Winslet, Saoirse Ronan, Willem Dafoe, and more.
There’s more on Rolling Stone’s list which you can check out here.
It’s going to be a good year for cinema.
