If Charlize Theron can go from Benoni to the big screen, you can’t blame some South Africans for dreaming of cracking Hollywood.

You’ll need more than a few lucky breaks and sliding door moments to achieve superstardom, and you’ll also need a talent agent with some connections in high places.

Sadly, as our local entertainment industry continues to suffer as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, some unscrupulous characters are making grand promises that they can’t quite fulfil.

One such character came to the attention of Carte Blanche, and that’s not good news for Bennie Wolmarans:

[COVID-19] hasn’t stopped one enterprising local talent agent from marketing his services to aspiring actors and making big promises of fame and gigs in Hollywood.

He even presented acting workshops to help his aspiring stars get ready for the big time. Now, some clients say it was all too good to be true and the money they poured into the dream just bought them pie in the sky.

Derek Watts is on the case, having tweeted that “there is something despicable about playing with young people’s dreams”.

There’s also an appearance from Leon Schuster, who is not impressed that Wolmarans has been throwing his name around.
