A couple of popular Scandinavian antidotes to stress have been doing the rounds, with little regard for the fact that most countries have higher rates of stress because our healthcare, welfare, and economy aren’t as great as that of Scandinavian countries.
But sure, let’s make some lifestyle changes. That’ll solve everything.
No, really.
A couple of lifestyle changes can actually make a difference even if they just break you out of the routine you’ve slumped into over the past year.
The Scandinavians seem to know what they’re doing in some regards. For example, they practice something called Kalsarikänni which involves drinking at home in your underwear.
Unfortunately, during the lockdown, this was less of a chosen lifestyle and more of a way to pass the time. Besides, we can’t buy alcohol right now, so that isn’t an option.
Instead, let’s head to Sweden for a few alcohol-free ways to chase the blues away, with Forbes.
Most of the tips involve surviving winter, but it’s been stinking hot for large parts of the week, so we’ll be skipping those.
Candles
Yes, candles, preferably set up on a table on your balcony or in your yard, with a cold glass of something in your hand, and some tunes on in the background.
The warm glow will calm your nerves.
Saturday Sweets
By now most of us have caught on to the fact that inhaling five or six chocolate bars a day because we’re bored isn’t great for one’s health.
Limiting that to one day a week, however, gives you something to look forward to, and makes Saturday a little more special.
Take Your Shoes Off
Wearing outdoor shoes inside in a Swedish home is a big no-no. Instead of stomping around your house in closed shoes, swap them out for a pair of slops saved for the indoors. Or just go barefoot. It’s your life.
Fika
In Sweden, fika – also known as an informal break for coffee and snacks – is an important part of the day.
Schedule one into your day, and stick to it. It’s a time to take a break from whatever you’re doing and chill.
Oh, and if the thought of a hot cup of coffee makes you want to cry in this heat, opt for something iced, like a cold brew.
Go Outside
You can’t go to the beach, but nothing is stopping you from taking a walk around the block and inhaling some fresh air.
Just make sure you’re wearing a mask, or the police might stop you, and that does nothing for your zen.
Some of these activities can also be done in your underwear, like taking a tea break or eating your Saturday choccie while walking around barefoot.
Just keep your pants on if you’re going outside.
