In another odd aviation event, a small plane fell out of the sky in Oyster Bay, New York.
This is the second private plane emergency in the space of just a few days.
In South Africa, a pilot managed to make an emergency landing next to the N4 in Pretoria.
The plane crash in New York played out a little differently after engine failure made it impossible for the pilot to land safely.
CBS2 spoke to witnesses on the scene:
“We just saw a plane flying very low. We heard ‘boom, boom, boom.’ That’s it,” Old Bethpage barber Arthur Khaimov said.
…“All of a sudden I saw out the window this small plane coming almost right towards the house. It was gliding sideways, so I knew something was wrong and then I heard some popping sounds, too,” witness Robbie Gerson said.
Khaimov ran outside his barbershop and looked up. Seconds later, there was an explosion.
The pilot was removed from the wreckage by a retired Nassau County Emergency Services officer who happened to be nearby.
First responder support teams arrived shortly thereafter to find the pilot in decent shape all things considered, albeit reluctant to get into another aircraft.
“He said, ‘You know what? I’ve just been in a plane crash. I don’t want to go in a helicopter now.’ So they transported him by ground,” Plainview first responder Larry Baron said.
Fair enough.
A surveillance camera caught the moment the twin-propeller Cessna C421 crashed 50 yards from an abandoned building in Old Bethpage.

A closer look at the crash:
Footage of the aftermath shows the extreme damage to the plane:
The pilot, who was alone in the aircraft, underwent surgery.
He suffered broken bones in his back, leg, and ribs.
He says that he hopes that he will be well soon so that he can thank the first responders.
