The South African judiciary has often received criticism for lenient sentencing, especially in cases of rape and murder.
Tyrone Lottering (below), 46, from Parkwood, despite being found guilty of murder and housebreaking in 2009, was sentenced to just 12 years.
After 10 years he was released from Pollsmoor Prison where he was serving his time and sent to his mother’s house in Blackbird Avenue, where he was required to stay under house arrest for the remainder of his sentence.
Then he went missing.
IOL reports that he was found to be missing when his parole officer stopped by to check on him over a year ago.
On Monday, the Grassy Park SAPS was approached by his parole officer who had obtained a warrant of arrest at the magistrate’s court for the suspect, says Station commander Colonel Dawood Laing.
“The officer went to the home to check up on him because he was supposed to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest. But the officer could not find him and was told by his mother that he had left.
“The officer has been looking for him since 2019 and when you provide an address but do not stay at that address, you have breached the parole conditions.”
So he’s been on the lamb for a while now.
More from Laing:
“The problem with the system is that they get found guilty of serious offences and then get given parole.
“Now he has violated his parole conditions and we have to go and find him to avoid having a potentially dangerous person on the streets.”
He goes on to point out that hunting for “old perpetrators” takes up valuable time and resources that should be used to investigate current, open cases.
Anyone with information should contact Detective Constable Paulsen on 062 002 2656.
And, if you see Lottering, don’t approach him.
