One of the biggest changes brought about by the pandemic is the move from brick and mortar office spaces to remote working.
Many of us are hunkered down at home and are only seeing or hearing from our colleagues via digital platforms like Zoom or Skype.
There are downsides to this.
When your workspace is also your living space and you’re staring at the same four walls day in and day out, life can get a little tedious.
Now, vaccinations seem to be on the horizon in several countries, bringing with them more freedom of movement (hopefully), and possibly a whole new way to work, while also seeing the world.
If you can travel…who knows what the restrictions will look like on a day to day basis?
Forbes calls those embracing work while travelling ‘digital nomads’.
Before you start planning your escape, however, there are a few things to take into account, and CircleLoop is here to help.
They looked at a range of factors, from the cost of internet speed and the Global Happiness Index to the monthly rent of a one-bedroom apartment and the number of searches for remote jobs, along with other important things to create the Digital Nomad Index.
With all of these factors taken into consideration, they award a score out of 100.
Before we take a closer look at the top three digital nomad destinations, here’s the top 10:

Moving on to the top three.
1. Canada
Canada is home to one of the largest tech hubs in the world, which makes it the ideal place to work remotely. Google and Mastercard have plans to open new offices and create job opportunities in the near future, so that’s worth keeping an eye on.
2. United Kingdom
Despite the weather, it turns out that the UK is one of the best places to relocate if you need a change of scenery. With the second-highest number of global searches for ‘remote jobs in the UK’, people everywhere are looking for a new adventure in the Queen’s country.
3. Romania
Romania is often associated with negative connotations due to unfortunate events and a corrupt political system, but it has a lot more going for it.
It’s one of the fastest-growing information technology markets in Central and Eastern Europe. This, combined with some of the cheapest average monthly costs of fixed-line broadband packages in the world and reliable internet access, makes it kind of ideal for remote working.
If you’re after a sunnier spot to set up a desk, the Mauritian government has recently released what they’re calling a new ‘Premium Long-Stay Visa’ program, designed to appeal to South Africans.
As for South Africa, we also appear on CircleLoop’s list at number 58 with a score of 47,29/100.
Not great but not too bad, either.
